Guide to the Coumadin Diet

Coumadin is a type of anticoagulant medication that is often advised for some people who suffer from blood vessel, lung and heart disorders.  It prevents abnormal bleeding and formation of blood clots.

While taking this drug, these people may also be prescribed a special diet call the Coumadin diet to support their recovery.  Coumadin (Warfarin) functions well with Vitamin K, therefore a diet rich in this type of Vitamin is essential to eliminate the risks of bleeding and forming blood clots.

Guide to the Coumadin Diet

The Coumadin diet requires you to consume Vitamin K-rich foods and a specific amount of it DAILY.  DO NOT load up on Vitamin K in one day, then stop taking it the following day because regularity and consistency are essential factors to using Coumadin for the full benefit of your condition.

Foods to consume regularly

The best source of Vitamin K can be found in dark leafy greens, however, there are many other food items such as meat and some oils that contain a good amount of Vitamin K.  Some foods and beverages that are HIGHLY recommended for those who take Coumadin for their condition are as follows:

  • Dairy Products such as Milk and Cheese especially Blue Cheese, with the exception of products manufactured from cow’s milk
  • Leafy Greens- Lettuce, Kale, Collard Greens, Chard, Spinach, Mustard Greens, Watercress, Beet Greens and Parsley are among the many
  • Fresh Fruits and Fruit Juice- AVOID Cranberry Juice and Grapefruit Juice
  • Broccoli and Cauliflower are great choices, as well as Cabbage and Asparagus
  • Peas and Green Beans
  • Meat such as Pork, Chicken and Beef Liver
  • Soybeans and Soybean Oil
  • Liverwurst and Beef Heart
  • Fat substitutes
  • Canola Oil, Salad Dressing, and Mayonnaise, which are made from Soybean or Canola Oil
  • Beverages include black and green tea, HOWEVER, be sure to consult your doctor to avoid any complications or interactions with your medication before you consume herbal teas or supplements.

What should be avoided?

  1. Do not drink alcohol– Alcohol should be completely avoided when taking Coumadin. It is advised to limit or quit drinking alcohol permanently.
  2. Herbal products– Certain herbal teas contain an ingredient called coumarin, which is not suitable to drink with your condition such as chamomile, sweet clover, tonka bean and sweet woodruff.
  3. Herbal supplements– Certain supplements are not recommended for people taking Coumadin including dong quai, red clover, and Echinacea, dashen, ginseng, and feverfew and ginkgo biloba.
  4. Vitamin e and c in large amounts- DO NOT take more than the recommended dose of Vitamin E and C because it can do more harm than good. When consumed in moderation, however, ginger, onion, garlic and fish oil as seasoning are fine.

Additional information and facts

Vitamin K can save the lives of the many people who are suffering from abnormal or severe bleeding by supporting the clotting of the blood.  Blood clots can be fatal, especially to those individuals who are already at high risk with blood vessel disorders, as well as those at high risk of developing a stroke.  Warfarin is highly recommended to people who are at higher risk of developing a stroke or blood vessel clots.  Individuals with atrial fibrillation and mechanical heart valves are often other types of patients that are advised to take this medication.

Certain conditions of below than normal Vitamin K levels in the body include bone fractures, advanced stages of osteoporosis as well as artery calcification.  Although this medication can save lives of many people who suffer from stroke and pulmonary embolism, Coumadin tents to antagonize the effects of Vitamin K and can result in health concerns related to problems in terms of the natural clotting cycle of the body.  It is important that the right eating plan is followed to prevent further complications related to the effects of Vitamin K to those individuals who take this medication.  DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOCTOR about taking herbal supplements, multivitamins and over-the-counter medications, and most importantly the plan to start your new diet.  Any symptoms such as diarrhea, fever or persistent stomach problems should seek emergency care immediately, since these are a few of the symptoms of those taking the wrong dosage.

Bottom line

Although there are no specific diets for individuals taking Coumadin, which is a medication used to treat blood clots, there are many foods and substances that can have negative effects in your body, therefore it is essential to pay close attention to what you eat and what supplements you consume to ensure your condition is improving and that you are receiving positive effects from your medication.

You should take a specific dosage of Vitamin K each day without consuming a higher than recommended dosage.  Vitamin K can minimize the effects of Coumadin if taken correctly.  To avoid complications, women should take a recommended dose of 90 mg per day and men should not exceed 120 mg each day.  It is crucial that you plan what you eat carefully each day, specifically foods with an excessive amount of Vitamin K to prevent further health issues.  Remember, foods that can be in consistent amounts consumed in moderation are kale, chard, green tea, spinach, parsley and Brussels sprouts.  ALSO, alcohol and cranberry juice ARE NOT ideal to drink while on the Coumadin diet.

Tips on How to Get Rid of Ingrown Hairs

Don’t get your hair all in a knot about it.  Okay, yes, the pun was intended.  However, on a serious note, an ingrown hair is not the end of the world and happens to everyone at one time or another.  Especially those who shave.

It’s irritating, and can stick out like a sore thumb which makes it even more irritating.  You might think ‘Are they talking to me, or at the red bump on my face?!’ You feel like it’s not an ingrown hair but more like a target that draws people’s attention from you to the irritating bump or bumps that you have.

Ingrown Hairs – What are they?

Okay, we know they are ingrown hairs that cause bumps.  They also are referred to as razor bumps sometimes.  Just a nicer way than getting technical with calling them ingrown hairs.  They happen when a hair follicle is blocked by dead skin that can usually happen when shaving.  The hair tends to make its way around the obstruction and makes its way out sideways.

how to get rid of ingrown hairs

It will then make a U-turn and start growing back in the way it came out.  This forms a loop in the hair and a bump or red mark.  Sometimes they are the cause of a little pain or itching.  Also, they can have swollen tissue around it, hence, the red bumps or “razor bumps” mentioned earlier.  They are harmless, more

How do I get rid of them?

For the love of all that is good and holy, you don’t want to walk around sporting these red bumps and trying not to play with them or scratch them if they itch.  There are ways to get rid of them that range from a little tweezing it correctly to over the counter medications that can help as well too.

One way to start is to tweeze it.  It sounds like an issue, but it really is not if done correctly.  You must be careful to actually tweeze the hair and not pinch the skin it’s growing from.  That will cause more irritation and issues that can even lead to infection.  What you want to do is make sure the hair is showing and don’t try to dig in the bump to get to it.  You might have to wait for it to grow a little more so that you can nab the hair with the tweezers.

Once you grab the hair with the tweezers, you want to gently pull on the hair that originally was growing outwards before it turned sideways and made a beeline back into your skin.  Pull on the hair in the direction it was growing out in.  Once you get that part out then pull on the other end of the hair that started to grow in and remove it.  Easily done.  Just be patient and gentle.

Want to ease the process even further?

This is a good way to go about it if you’re ‘tweezer impaired’ and also help with any itching and swelling.  Purchase some hydrocortisone cream and apply it according to the directions to the ingrown hair and bump.  This cream will not only make it stop itching, it will also help with some swelling and redness caused by the ingrown hair.  It makes it easier to tweeze it out or even pull on it with your fingers, just remember to pull in the original direction the hair started growing in and you’re good to go!

Shaving cream helps too!

Ingrown hairs are a handful,  you might want to use shaving cream or hot compresses when shaving to free the hair in the follicle for easy removal. Then you will know that people are looking at you and not those pesky bumps!

Causes Of Skin Tags On Lips: Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Them

Having a completely spotless skin over one’s lifetime is near impossible because blemishes will definitely develop at some point on one’s skin. One of such blemish is skin tag. Though skin tag is more common among older people, young people aren’t completely excluded.

Otherwise known as achrochordon, skin tag is an irregular skin growth about the size of a rice grain which develops on the skin. It is commonly found under the armpit or breast, on the neck and eyelids. There are also rare cases of skin tag developing on the lips.

Skin tags aren’t harmful. However, it distorts the looks of a person especially if it develops on the lips, hence leading to battered self-esteem and low confidence. People who suffer from such skin complication often seek treatment for cosmetic reasons. Techniques such as laser removal and surgical excision can be used in the removal of skin tags. Better still, natural home remedies can be used in the elimination of skin tags.

Causes of skin tags on the Lips

There are lots of factors that are responsible for the development of skin tag, with some of them being obesity, friction on the skin and genetics. The condition is common to both men and women. Skin tag is more common on areas of the skin that suffer constant friction. Heredity is a culprit as well.

Falling into the habit of lips biting, also leads to skin tags because it leads to the damaging of soft tissues of the lips. Skin tag develops when once the damaged tissues start repairing due to the collection of excess collagen and blood vessel. This is the reason why men also suffer skin tag after shaving.

Other factors responsible for skin tag include; obesity, hormonal changes, HPV infection, and excessive intake of steroids.

Home Remedies To Remove Skin Tags On Lips

Skin tags are harmless overgrowth which hangs out from the skin. It causes embarrassment especially when it occurs on the lips. While some are okay living with them, others take active steps in treating them.

Different techniques can be used in the removal of skin tags. One of them is surgical excision which involves cryotherapy or laser treatment. The drawback however is that they are pretty expensive and so home based remedies will be a better alternative.

  • Make a paste out of castor oil and baking powder. Apply the paste on the skin and go to bed with it. By morning, wash off the paste with slightly warm water and then clean with a clean towel. Repeat this until you see results.
  • Juice from onions can also be effectively used in the treatment of tags. Apply some of the juice on the affected spot and then go to bed with it. Do this over and over again until you see results.
  • Dental floss can also be effective. This should be done at the base of the tag, as it will eventually cause it to fall off. Tying floss at the base of the tag cuts off blood supply, eventually causing the tag to eventually die off.
  • Homeopathic drugs such as thuja can be used in the treatment of tags. The drugs cause the tags to dry up.
  • Applying vitamin E sourced from capsules on the tag dries up the skin tag. Doing this for 15 days will eventually lead to complete healing.

How to Get Rid of Eczema Safely

Eczema refers to a cluster of conditions in the skin that causes it to inflame. The most typical type of eczema is the Atopic Dermatitis. Being atopic means that you start to get allergies and become extra sensitive to the outdoors.

Your immune system will start to respond violently, which would result to your skin becoming swollen and red, and will feel like you’ve been stung by a bug.

Eczema can also be hereditary, which means that it could be passed down from one generation to the other. Other main causes of eczema would include hypersensitivity, meaning that your immune system and skin is over-reactive or oversensitive. Even the smallest exposure to a trigger (like an allergen) will make your skin get inflamed and will make your white blood cells more reactive.

What about traditional eczema treatments?

A lot of the methods used today to treat eczema do not necessarily heal it, just control the eczema to make your skin look normal and fresh.

How to Get Rid of Eczema Safely

Topical and Oral Steroids

Your physician may prescribe steroid medications like ointments, lotions and creams that need a direct application to affected areas. You r skin might sting very much when you apply it if it has become raw or severely inflamed, and your physician will assure you that the irritation will be gone slowly as the eczema improves.

If your eczema has become very severe, your physician might prescribe steroid medication to take orally or injections to help control the symptoms. While injectable and oral steroids are highly effective, they have some pretty bad side effects with prolonged use and are quite expensive.

In summary, people taking steroids orally for a very long time may suffer side effects that would include weak and fragile bones, increased risk of infections, muscle weakness, high blood pressure, thinning of the skin and cataracts.

Medicinal cures

You might be prescribed by your physician to apply cortisone cream. Be careful about this. Cortisone cream causes the skin to thin down when it is used long-term. The skin would then be prone to infection and bruising. When the body detects an extra source of cortisone, i t decreases its very own production of cortisone. Cortisone is essential in regulating blood pressure, which means that if you’re hypersensitive, it might be good to dump cortisone cream.
There are other creams that are based on hydrocortisone, and they are: clobetasol (Temovate), triamcinolone, fluocininonide (Lidex), mometasone (Elocon), and betamethasone (Diprolene, Diprosone, Valisone). There is a lot of other creams than the ones listed. They all work in the same way which is reducing the inflammation but, as a patient with eczema, you must use them at your own risk. All the creams stated won’t really work on the root cause of eczema.

Antihistamines

Other than oral and topical steroids, one might also be prescribed oral antihistamines to control the itching. These medicines may make you sleepy and be an obstacle to your daily activities. Be very careful when operating machinery and driving when you take drowsy-making oral antihistamines.

Immunomodulators

Physicians are also quite interested in using a special medication category called Immunomodulators, and these interfere with your immune system’s normal functioning. These meds are only to be used when other methods have failed and might inflict serous side effects.
Putting all those in mind, here is how you can get rid of eczema naturally and most importantly, safely:

Natural Skin Cures for Eczema

These completely natural cures are very safe for both infants and adults. The only con is that they sort of take some time to prepare, and sometimes, it might be hard to find high-quality, good variants. If you’re planning to buy online, first check the seller’s ratings and the product reviews. You can also use these natural cures anytime you wish.

Emu Oil

Within as quickly as four hours, people with eczema experience improvement when using Emu Oil. The primary component why emu oil is very effective in treating eczema is oleic acid, an ingredient that comprises 70% of the oil’s fatty acid. Other than eczema, emu oil is also amazing in treating oozing burns, psoriasis, acne, wrinkles, dandruff, surgery scars, muscle pain and stretch marks (red and silver/white types).

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is also a good treatment for burns. For eczema, you can buy the whole Aloe Vera plant, and then cut a section before putting it in the freezer and applying the gel to the eczema. It contains anti-bacterial enzymes so that it can be left over night under a gauze pad dressing.

Sweet Almond Oil

This oil may be mixed with cocoa butter or applied alone. It’s packed with ursolic and oleic acid, both proven effective in reducing inflammation.

Virgin Coconut Oil

Virgin coconut oil comes with this earthy, nutty coconut that may be bothering to some people, but it is packed in important fatty acids & has antibacterial properties, making coconut oil have the ability to reduce dryness and inflammation and will help protect your skin against any infection.

Evening Primrose Oil

This oil is great for vegetarians and animal-rights advocates as this isn’t an animal-based product. Evening primrose oil is a good sub for emu oil as it almost has the same composition of the latter. Like emu oil and fish oil, it has linolenic acid (this is different from linolenic). Linoleic acid is a precursor to anti-inflammatory enzymes that can be found in the skin.

Fish Oil

This oil, often compared to co-animal-sourced emu oil, is effective in treating eczema due to its two anti-inflammatory Omega – 3 fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Chamomile Oil

This oil has three uses – it’s antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. It contains apigenin, chamazulene, and bisabolol. All of the compounds have the aforementioned benefits. On one hand, don’t take the chamomile oil if you have an allergic reaction to chrysanthemum, daisy or celery.

You may also want to try out some other natural remedies to help speed up the healing process.

– Have a balanced diet and cut off an all offending food like processed and canned food. Should you have food allergies, be sure to take out all the ingredients in order to improve the condition of your skin.
– Be sure to drink at least eight to ten glasses of water every day to keep you and your skin hydrated. Drinking more would be even more helpful.
– Avoid mental activities and physical exertion that will tire you, worsening your eczema.
– Keep stress to a minimum and be happy.
– Make sure you have a peaceful, 8-10 hour sleep every night.
