Vulvar Cysts: Causes, Symptoms and Remedies

Vulvar Cysts: Causes, Symptoms and Remedies

Cyst, when it develops in the vulvar is referred to as vulvar cyst. Vulva is the external part of the genitals of a female. Female vulva, as most people erroneously believe isn’t a single organ.

It consists of several other parts which include the inner lips known as labia minora, the outer lips known as labia majora, mons pubis, clitoris, hymen, urinary meatus, bartholin gland and skene ducts.

A cyst is basically a closed sac which contains gelatinous materials. The major forms of vulvar cyst are skene duct cyst and bartholin cyst.

Of the two, Bartholin gland cyst is the most popular. Due to their tiny glands, it is very difficult to detect bartholin glands. The mostly develop around the labial folds, close to the vaginal opening. They are responsible for the secretion of moisture which the vaginal area needs to stay moist when having sex. The secreted fluid is known as serous fluid. The major cause of Bartholin cyst is the blockage of tube connecting the gland to its opening. When this happens, the gland becomes enlarged and filled with fluid. Bartholin cyst affects about 2 to 3% of all women. It mostly affects the younger women.

Skene gland, just like bartholin gland is tiny in size, and also secretes fluids which serve as lubricants during sexual intercourse, thus keeping the vagina clean. The free flow of mucus fluid ensures the vagina stays clean at all times. When these glands get blocked, cyst development is what follows, and this kind of cyst is commonly referred to as vulvar cyst.

No one knows for sure what causes the blockage of the glands in the vulva. Some scientists believe the condition results when body hormones change, which will into led to the change in fluid chemistry. Researchers strongly believe that infection of the genital tract, caused by sexually transmitted diseases is responsible for the formation of cyst on the vulvar glands. Additionally, sexually inactive women are more likely to suffer vulvar cyst due to irregular circulation of the blood.

Symptoms of Cyst in the Vulvar

Cysts which build in the vulvar are asymptomatic in nature. Simply put, no form of symptom accompanies the condition, and the patient may suffer the condition her entire life without even knowing it. When it gets enlarged, cyst often becomes palpated. This is more common with bartholin cyst. Enlarged cyst causes a woman to feel pain and uneasiness when she walks of sits. If left untreated, it can make sex less appealing to a woman. Bartholin cyst due to its unilateral nature only affects one side of the vulvar.

Cyst caused by the blockage of the skene gland makes a woman feel pain during sex. Due to its proximity to the urethral opening, skene cyst can obstruct the flow of urine. When this happens, the sufferer experiences severe pain when passing urine. Women suffering from this condition often complain of urine dribbling.

Home remedies for the treatment of cyst on the vulva

Surgical operation or conservative treatments are the two major means of treating cysts. Tiny and painless cysts can be easily treated at home. Such treatment technique requires filling a tub with warm water and then sitting in it for 15 minutes. This will have to be done nothing less than thrice a day.

On its own, most cysts naturally go away after about three weeks. While waiting for the cyst to fade, it is important to maintain good hygiene. The genital area must be kept clean and dry at all times. Antibiotics can also be used in the treatment of cyst.

While treating this problem, it is important that you stay away from sex.
