Effective Home Treatment/remedy for Rash from Chlorine Allergy

Chlorine contained in municipal water often irritates the skin. Rash is what follows after the affected skin has been exposed to some chemicals. These chemicals can be found in hot tubs and swimming pools.

The simplest way to avoid this kind of rashes is to stay away from chlorinated water. In the right amount, chlorine won’t cause any rash. Rash often results from making contact with water that contains excess chlorine. Exposure to undiluted chlorine increases also leads to skin allergy.

Below are some of the symptoms of chlorine rash. While some will disappear after a couple of hours, others will take days to disappear.

  • Itching which can either be localized or generalized
  • Reddened bumps on the skin
  • Skin dryness

Chlorine Allergy

The rash that results from making contact with chlorinated water is known as dermatitis. Exposure to chlorine leads to allergic reactions which may take the following forms:

  • Difficult breathing: This happens because the airways become swollen thus blocking free passage of air.
  • Dizziness
  • Swelling of the face, lips and tongue
  • Syncope

These symptoms can take between minutes to hours to appear after contact is first made with chlorinated water. Medical consultation should be sought immediately allergic reaction is suspected.

Treatment for chlorine rash

Below are some treatments that can be administered to a patient who has developed rash due to allergy to chlorine.

  • Use of anti-inflammatory drugs
  • Use of corticosteroids as it helps relieve the affected skin of itching and swelling

Home treatment for chlorine rash

  • Warm and cold pressing the affected site to rid the skin of itching and swelling
  • Sitz or starch bath. Corn starch helps relieve the skin of itching. This can be done using a basin or in a bathtub
  • Aloe Vera also works well is it helps relieve the skin of itchiness.

Ways of preventing chlorine allergy

  • The chlorine contained in the water you bath with should have the right concentration of chlorine
  • As much as possible, avoid swimming in public pools which of course contains high level of chlorine
  • Chlorine should be added in the right amount to swimming pools.
