What Is A Receded Chin?
Simply put, when a chin is smaller in size as compared to normal chins, it is referred to as a receded chin. Quite clearly, a short chin affects the facial beauty and hence, the confidence of a person.
In some cases, it has been noticed that a receding chin often leads to a double chin, which is again considered unattractive by one and all.
How Does A Receding Chin Impact A Person?
Needless to mention, a receding chin is far from good news for people. Those who suffer from it feel highly unattractive and would do anything to fix it. There are instances of teenagers getting affected by it so much that it challenges their self-esteem, too.
That is not all. There are a lot of dental problems that surface because of a receding chin. Common problems like crowding and abnormal growth of teeth result due to a receding chin.
What Causes A Receding Chin?
There are many factors that lead to a receding chin.
Congenital factors: It has been noticed that a receding chin can be since the time of birth. In fact, in many cases it could be there since fetal stages. Medically, it is regarded as one of most common occurring retrograde development of chin. Another similar condition is micrognathia in which the upper jaw outgrows the lower jawbone.
Recession of chin: Even though it is a rare occurrence after adolescence, the recession of chin has been commonly found in people.
In rare instances when a person suffers from the arthritis of lower jawbone, recession of chin happens. Most doctors are of the view that the problem is found only in elderly people. However, it has been noticed that it can affect a person if he or she has gone for a surgical removal of a part of their lower jawbone.
What Are The Symptoms Of Receding Chin?
It is not difficult to tell if a person has a receding chin. Most of the time, people are able to tell it all by themselves that they have one, just by looking at their chins, which is small in size, making the face look flat.
When the lower jaw is smaller as compared to the upper jaw, the upper lips look protruded. In such a case a person experiences difficulty in chewing because the top teeth always miss the teeth on the lower jaw.
Sometimes, patients may experience pain in temporomandibular joint, especially when they are laughing and eating, more so in case of associated arthritis.
Not just that, the wrinkles around the mouth look more prominent and conspicuous because of the small size of the chin. Similar symptoms have been noticed in people who later develop double chin.
How To Treat A Receding Chin?
It is important to know that receding chin rarely poses any health threats. The only trouble it brings is it affects the aesthetics of a person’s face.
If a receding chin is solely because of an untreated disease, then, in most cases it is possible to stop the recession of the chin. In some cases, it has even been found that the condition can be reversed.
If it is congenital, or if it is the result of mandible cancer, then only a surgery can correct it.
There are number of surgeries that can fix the problem effectively.
Bilateral sagital split osteotomy is one of the most popular procedures, where a split is made in the lower jawbone and then it is shifted forward.
Another surgery that deserves mention here is mandible distraction where an intra oral system is fixed to stimulate the growth of the bone. Because of its simplicity, this procedure is becoming increasingly popular.
