Vulvar Cysts: Causes, Symptoms and Remedies

Cyst, when it develops in the vulvar is referred to as vulvar cyst. Vulva is the external part of the genitals of a female. Female vulva, as most people erroneously believe isn’t a single organ.

It consists of several other parts which include the inner lips known as labia minora, the outer lips known as labia majora, mons pubis, clitoris, hymen, urinary meatus, bartholin gland and skene ducts.

A cyst is basically a closed sac which contains gelatinous materials. The major forms of vulvar cyst are skene duct cyst and bartholin cyst.

Of the two, Bartholin gland cyst is the most popular. Due to their tiny glands, it is very difficult to detect bartholin glands. The mostly develop around the labial folds, close to the vaginal opening. They are responsible for the secretion of moisture which the vaginal area needs to stay moist when having sex. The secreted fluid is known as serous fluid. The major cause of Bartholin cyst is the blockage of tube connecting the gland to its opening. When this happens, the gland becomes enlarged and filled with fluid. Bartholin cyst affects about 2 to 3% of all women. It mostly affects the younger women.

Skene gland, just like bartholin gland is tiny in size, and also secretes fluids which serve as lubricants during sexual intercourse, thus keeping the vagina clean. The free flow of mucus fluid ensures the vagina stays clean at all times. When these glands get blocked, cyst development is what follows, and this kind of cyst is commonly referred to as vulvar cyst.

No one knows for sure what causes the blockage of the glands in the vulva. Some scientists believe the condition results when body hormones change, which will into led to the change in fluid chemistry. Researchers strongly believe that infection of the genital tract, caused by sexually transmitted diseases is responsible for the formation of cyst on the vulvar glands. Additionally, sexually inactive women are more likely to suffer vulvar cyst due to irregular circulation of the blood.
